When I first toyed with the thought of becoming a photographer I asked myself what it was that intrigued me about photography and why it was something I desperately wanted to do. My answer was simple, I know how an image can move me emotionally and I want to create images that move people emotionally or capture emotion in portraiture.
I will admit that nature photography is my first love…it’s not hard to convey emotion in landscapes and flora. Beauty created by God is everywhere and capturing the right location, in the right light, at the right time speaks for itself and speaks volumes of emotion. You don’t have to worry about pose, lighting, or a baby crying…nature is there for the taking when you are ready!
I’ve been lucky enough to photograph some pretty incredible locations but there are several photographs that I consider important to me that I haven’t photographed. I’ve made it my purpose and goal to photograph these ten things before I leave this world:
1. Edinburgh Castle, Scotland
Although I’m intrigued by historic buildings of the United States, I would say photographing a European castle dating back three thousand years would be so nostalgic and overwhelming that it would bring me to tears.
2. Sand Dunes
What an incredible sight sand dunes can be! Fast moving abstract landscapes.
3. A Blue Iceberg
Massive moving ice… They often come from the bottom of a glacier and may be 80,000 years old when they hit the sea. Ice filters out all colors but blue and are simply stunning to behold I’m almost positive.
4. Fiji Island Beaches
Spending time on the secluded island of Fiji photographing their pristine white beaches and beautiful emerald green waters while sipping a cool drink with a little umbrella!
5. New York City
Capturing the skyline of the city that never sleeps at night! All photographers should have one of these in their portfolio.
6. Kentucky Derby
Growing up on a horse farm I have always had a love and respect for horses! Being able to photograph a race with almost 140 years of tradition would be over the top!
7. The Planets
I’m sure this one wouldn’t be hard to do…it’s all in knowing how and when.
8. The Act of War
Although not the ideal job for a photographer, the idea of capturing images of a war torn area is compelling and dangerous!
9. A Complete Story
Sure creating a great portrait is rewarding but I want to tell the complete story. In a photojournalistic way I want to show the full story…something reminiscent of Dorthea Lange and her portrait of a 32 year old mother with her seven kids at the height of the depression in California.
10. An Image That Makes a Difference
If none of my images above seem to come to fruition I hope that I can leave at least one image that changes the course of history or affects the way someone sees the world, town, or person! It would be my greatest accomplishment to take a picture that gives joy, promise, or reflection whenever it’s seen!
Until next time – keep smilin’
